Tax Investigations

Review of Company Procedures

With PAYE Compliance reviews becoming more common and often leading to additional Income Tax and National Insurance liabilities, why not take action now and prevent any nasty surprises.

It is a common misconception that Compliance Visits are a simple review of the wages records, when actually they are one of the most in-depth enquiries.

HM Revenue & Customs have a broad authority to examine the following records:

  1. Copies of P11ds and P9ds
  2. Wages Records
  3. Petty cash records
  4. Expense claims
  5. Cash book
  6. Purchase invoices
  7. Timesheets
  8. Bank statements and cheque book stubs

The purpose of the review is to:

  1. Ensure compliance with PAYE regulations
  2. Application of National Insurance
  3. Review status of workers
  4. Ensure correct taxation of benefits

Depending on the size of the business, one or more reviewers will undertake the inspection of the records and carry out an initial interview with the director or relevant person. The reviewer will work their way through a questionnaire, the answers to which will be used to determine which areas give cause for concern.

On conclusion of the review, a letter will be sent setting out the findings of the review and a calculation of any proposed additional Tax and National Insurance liabilities.

Often, with the correct approach, the adjustments sought by the Revenue can be challenged and the additional liabilities mitigated.

With Revenue departments now all working closely together, any irregularities discovered are likely to be passed on to their colleagues.
