How long will it last ?

Most local Office enquiries can be concluded in 2 to 6 months depending on their complexity, whilst investigations under SCI or CIF will last between 6 to 18 months.

Can I face criminal prosecution ?

Serious tax fraud can lead to a criminal prosecution. However, if the Investigation is dealt with under CIF procedures and a full disclosure is made the Revenue will not prosecute.

Will I have to meet with HM Revenue & Customs ?

For more serious investigations you will have to meet with the Inspector or Inspectors. For Local Office enquiries you do not have to meet with the Inspector, although in certain circumstances it may assist in concluding the enquiry in a more timely fashion.

How long can they go back ?

HM Revenue & Customs are able to go back 20 years.

Will I face a penalty ?

Penalties of up to 100% of the tax payable may be levied. The level of penalties are reduced depending on the circumstances. Please click here for more details.

In addition to the penalty interest will be charged on any underpayment of tax.

Can I just ignore it ?

Investigation will not just go away. A far more sensible approach is to face up to the situation take advice and seek the best possible outcome.
